About Franklin County Idaho

Franklin County was established January 30, 1913. It is located in southeastern Idaho. As of the 2020 Census the County had a population of 14,194. The County seat and largest city is Preston. The County was established in 1913 and named after Franklin D. Richards, an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the only Franklin County in the United States that is not named after Benjamin Franklin. Franklin County is also home to Idaho's Oldest Town - Franklin. 

Franklin County is an ideal place for diversified agricultural and livestock raising. It is home of That Famous Preston Night Rodeo and brilliant colors decorate the canyons in the Fall. The Festival of Lights, a holiday tradition, kicks off the Christmas season. Franklin County has several historical places which include the Bear River Massacre Site, Relic Hall, Hatch and Mathias Cowley houses, and the Oneida Stake Academy. 


The county has a total area of 668 square miles, of which 664 square miles is land and 4.7 square miles is water. Franklin County is known for its recreational areas. Snowmobile riders can climb mountains or simply take the family on a groomed trail. In the early spring, through summer, you can ride your four-wheeler and ATV on trails that stretch from our valley into Bear Lake and beyond. We have several lakes within our County that offer all sorts of water skiing and fishing opportunities, from trout, bass, perch, blue gill and tiger muskies to walleye.
